Discover Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh
The Mekong's Vietnamese name, Cuu Long, means Nine Dragons for the nine mouths that terminate the flow of this great river as it is absorbed by the sea The people of south Vietnam are often very proud of the richness and vastness of this land. When referring to the rice fields in this area, they often say, "co bay thang canh", meaning the land is so large that the cranes can stretch their wings as they fly. Today, the region is one of Vietnam's highest producer of rice crops, vegetables and fruits. My Tho, a capital of Tien Giang Province, is now a bustling port city in the Mekong River Delta which is two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh and is the final destination of the Mekong River which winds its way from Tibet, China, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, and finally Vietnam. It is a transportation and commercial center for a rich agricultural region and has some manufacturing industries. It is also noted for its exuberant orchards and immense rice fields. Boat tour on the Mekong River is the amusing activity in My Tho. On the boat ride, you will be guided to visit an island with lush tropical gardens where you will have a chance to sample tropical fruit. Continuing to another island in the Mekong Delta, you will learn more about another cottage industry, coconut candy. Your local guide will take you to a coconut candy factory and explain the process of making this sweet. Visiting local villages in the area, you will have chance to learn more about the traditional lifestyles, culture and customs. Continuing by motorized cart (xe loi) to a bee farm where you will transfer to a smaller rowing boat which allows you to get deeper into the smaller canals of the Delta.
