Quang Binh Overview

Topography

Quang Binh has a narrow and complicated topography which slopes from west to east. Mountains and hills takes up 85% and concentrate in the west (the Phi Co Pi is the highest mount peak which is 2017 meters high). Near the coast line is a small and narrow plain, and the coastal sandy beaches stretching along the sea.

Climate

Quang Binh lies within the tropical monsoon climate region and is always influenced by the climate of both the North and the South. A year is reflected through two distinct seasons: rainy season from September to March of the following year (rainfall concentrates much in September, October and November); dry season from April to August with the average temperature of 24-25oC (the hottest months are June, July and August).

Land, flora and fauna

The soil comprises two main types: alluvial soil in plain region and pheralit soil in muountain and hill region.

Quang Binh is located within the North Truong Son ecological diversity zone – the home to a diversified flora and fauna system with many precious gene sources. Phong Nha-Ke Bang Karst region is typical for the ecological diversity of the province.

Fauna system: there are 493 species, 67 species of animal, 48 species of reptile, 297 species of bird, 61 species of fish, etc., many species of which are rare and precious like Ha Tinh langur, bear, tiger, pheasant, Giant muntjact, lophura, etc.

Flora system: the forest occupies a total area of 486.688 hectares with many species of flora belonging to 138 families, 401 branches and 640 difference species. You can also find various rare and presious species of plants here such as ironwood, sindora vietnamiensis, ebony, fragrant wood, pine, rattan, etc. Quang Binh also lies among the provinces to provide the largest wood reserve of about 31 million metric meters.

Marine resources and coastal resources

Quang Binh has a long coastline with five estuaries. Besides, there are many sea ports like Nhat Le, Gianh, Hon La. Along with the deep water ports is a large ground area which is very suitable for setting up of an industrial zone near the sea ports.

The vast continental shelf and a large economic priority zone of above 20 thousand square kilometers and off shore islands (Hon La, Hon Gio, Hon Nom, Hon Co, Hon Chua) has brought about big fishing grounds with a large reserve of about 100 thousand tons of seafood of all kinds.

The north of the province hosts hectares of white coral, which is the precious material for handicraft production and also a ecological zone of the coral reef.

Water resource

Quang Binh comprises a vast river and stream system with five main rivers: Roon, Gianh, Ly Hoa, Dinh and Nhat Le River. In addition, there are nearly 160 lakes (both natural and artificial ones) with estimated capacity of 243,3 million metric meteres.

Mineral resources

The province has many species of minerals like gold, iron, titan, pyrite, lead, zinc, etc. and several non-metal minerals such as kaolin, quartzy sand, limestone, marble stone, Granit stone, etc. The reserve of kaolin and limestone is large enough to develop the cement and construction material industry of large scale. Besides, the province also possesses the mineral stream of 105oC and a large reserve of gold.

Population and people

According to the population census of 2009, Quang Binh’s population is 846.924 people. There are 24 ethnic groups live together in the region. Kinh people account for the majority, after that is Van Kieu people and Chut people. Each of other ethnic minority groups comprises few people, about less than 100 people each.

Culture and Tourism Potential

Quang Binh can be compared to a charming picture with marvelous landscape. The sandy beaches with blue miracle water surface lying under the evergreen forests; this is the harmonious combination of natural colors which will bring about comfortable feeling to tourists. The province is home to wwell-known beauty spots like Phong Nha Cave, Tien Son Cave, the primitive forest in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Reserve, Nhat Le beach, Da Nhay beach, and Bang hot stream, etc. Phong Nha – Ke Bang has been recognized as a world natural heritage and Vietnam’s National tourist site. Furthermore, Quang Binh also possesses many historical and cultural relics of different dynasties. The Bau Tro archaeological site and several relics of Hoa Binh and Dong Son are situated here.
