The first characteristic to be mentioned is the two vast plain regions namely the Red River Delta and the Mekong River Delta. These are the main residential place of people in the north and in the south. Generally, the even and flat terrain has created favorable conditions for the agricultural cultivation as well as the development of many economic sectors.

If you are planning to travel to the northern part of Vietnam, there may be some destinations which you should not miss. Among these is Sapa which is considered Dalat of the north. For foreigners who come from western countries, it may not be a surprise to see occasional snowfalls during Sapa’s winter. However, for Vietnamese people in general and for those who live in the southern part of Vietnam in particular, snowfalls in a rare phenomenon. A large number of foreign travelers love Sapa not only because of its mild climate in summer, but also for highest mountain peak there, the Fansipan, where they can take part in adventurous activities.

The center of Vietnam tends to suffer from much natural calamities due to its geographical location as well as topographical characteristics. The Truong Son Mountain range has divided the center into two separate regions with distinguished climate pattern. The northern central region and the north of Hai Van Pass are sometimes affected by the cold weather and droughty period caused by the hot and dry westerly wind. The coastal southern central region suffers high temperature all year round (sometimes even more than 40oC). However, if you travel to the center of Vietnam but still want to enjoy the cool and comfortable weather conditions, do visit Bana Mountain which is often referred to as the Dalat of the center. This area possesses a tropical type of climate with the annual average temperature of 15-20oC. While staying there, you can visit the Linh Ung Pagoda or relax yourself at several resort centers.

Most of the south of Vietnam is located on an even and flat terrain so it is likely to receive more favorable conditions with little change in the annual climate pattern. The region is featured by monsoon tropical type of climate with two main seasons: rainy season and dry season. If you travel to the south, you may experience the high temperature all the year with lots of rain. Nevertheless, like in the north and the center, you can also find yourself a cooler place to relax. Dalat of the south is the real Dalat where you can rest yourself without worrying about the hot weather or tropical storms. Dalat is situated on Lang Biang Highland with the highest position is the Museum House and the lowest one is Nguyen Tri Phuong Valley. The high location and the surrounding pine tree forests have brought the temperate zone-like climate type to Dalat. There you will have chance to visit both mountains and valleys through different kinds of activities.

In addition, along with the diversity of topography there are a wide range of caves and grottoes spreading from north to south. In the north, you may visit Halong with a variety of beautiful natural caves. Tam Coc-Bich Dong in Ninh Binh province is also worth-visiting for its beautiful caves combined with mountains. This beauty spot is often referred to as the Halong on land.  The center of Vietnam is also featured by a system of caves belonging to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. This cave complex has been recognized as the World Natural Heritage by UNESCO with regards to geology and geomorphology. These are several well-known caves which are formed by the special geographical change during a long historical period. Besides, there are many other caves in many part of the country. If you have interest, try to explore them since there is still a lot of unknown ones.

In short, Vietnam’s geography is a combination of various factors from topography, climate and natural conditions of each region. It is the special geographical feature that creates a Vietnam with lots of tourist attractions available almost everywhere along the country.
